Americans Don’t Know Why We Celebrate the Fourth of July (short video & article)

If your answer is no, today is the day to find out. Our freedom gets taken for granted because we have it and we've had it for so long. But history is predominantly filled with oppressed people. Freedom is rare and only 5% of all the people in the history of mankind have ever experienced it. Appreciate it. Celebrate it!

Do you know why we celebrate July 4th?

Too many Americans say no. And it’s a darn shame because it’s such an important fact in our history. In fact, a majority of Americans don’t know a lot of important facts in American history.

Watch Mark Dice talk with California beach goers about the 4th of July. He, embarrassingly, finds that many Americans simply don’t know WHY we celebrate the 4th of July or what country we declared independence from.

This video identifies with a number of polls in recent years that show a disturbing amount of ignorance and ambivalence many Americans have when it comes to the founding of their own country, why they have freedoms and a high standard of living.

A 2011 Maris poll found that, “Only 58 percent of residents know that the United States declared its independence in 1776.” Around a quarter of U.S. citizens have no idea who America declared its independence from.

The numbers are even more upsetting when it comes to America’s youth. 14 percent of teens think that the U.S. declared independence from France, while another 5 per cent thought it was Canada. It’s England in case you were sitting there scratching your head.

I found this image on the internet of England’s perspective of the Fourth of July and thought I’d share because it was funny. Maybe it will help some of you remember who we fought a Revolutionary War against so we would no longer be under royal, oppressive, tyrannical rule.

Unfortunately, America has a new kind of tyranny in its hallowed halls of D.C. But that’s for another post.

Despite the unfortunate and depressing news of our growing national ignorance, I still want to wish every American a fantastic Fourth of July!!

I hope today is the day you decide to re-engage in our country’s beautiful history of becoming the most free land, the most prosperous people, and the country with an abundance of opportunity to pursue dreams. America truly is an exceptional country. But we all need to know its history in order to keep these gifts.

  1. You were expecting ? This is a country that thinks Hillary Clinton would be a good president for crying out loud . This is why people should be required to pass a basic civics test before voting . You don’t get to drive without proving you’re not a danger to the rest of us and voting in the wrong people can be far more dangerous . The left would never go for it though. Weed out the ding bats and they would lose most of their voting base .
